Minister Maynard Announces New EV Incentive Aimed at Accelerating the Energy Transition

Date:

Basseterre, Saint Kitts (Public Infrastructure News) – On Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Hon Minister Konris Maynard announced a new incentive designed to facilitate the transition to cleaner transportation in Saint Kitts and Nevis. The announcement was made during the official launch ceremony of the SOLARISE and DRIVE initiatives at the CUNA Conference Room in Saint Kitts.

The incentive focuses exclusively on fully electric vehicles (EVs) and introduces a significant reduction in import duties, lowering costs from the traditional rate of 45% to 10%. The reduced rate will apply to EVs aged 0 to 4 years and will take effect from May 1, 2026. By reducing these duties, the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis aims to combat the high upfront cost of EVs.

Motorists and vehicle retailers stand to benefit greatly from this incentive as lower import duties will result in more affordable retail prices, encouraging more consumers to consider making the switch to electric vehicles.

The incentive forms part of a broader national strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease reliance on imported fossil fuels.
